About the film

B R E A K A B L E (2016)

When his beloved music box breaks, an elderly man is offered help from a Filipino caregiver to fix it. The two seem to have more similarities than appears at first sight.

This film is inspired by a personal story from the director. In his youth he was separated from his mother while she was working in another country and had to leave her family behind in Manila.

Winston Catarroja

Winston (1979) is born in the Philippines. He studied Mass Communications and Motion Picture Production Program in Manila and Digital Filmmaking at SAE Institute in Amsterdam.

The CinemAsia FilmLAB is firming its position of developing new talent for the Dutch industry: the majority of the participants continue their career in film. Previous CinemAsia FilmLAB productions like LAXMI CALLING LING (2010) took part in the Official Selection of the Dutch Film Festival, BUNDA DI RUMAH (2014) took part in the Official Selection of Film by the Sea International Film Festival and UNTUK SELALU (2015) that was official selected for Bali International Film Festival.

Mentor: Jimmy Tai

Jimmy Tai, Dutch filmmaker of Chinese descent, is the CinemAsia FilmLAB mentor for the third time in a row. Jimmy studied scenario & directing at the University of the Arts in Utrecht. His graduation film Harakiri was nominated for Best Student Film at the Dutch Film Festival. In 2006 he made PING for CinemAsia FilmLAB. He also worked as the assistant director on productions like Bro’s Before Ho’s, New Kids, De Club van Sinterklaas, Mees Kees op de Planken, Sonny Boy, ‘t Schaep met de 5 Pooten, etc. Jimmy, who has also made different Chinese diaspora films before, looks forward to guide the FilmLAB 2016 participants: “The ingredients to make a good film differ per project. That makes me approach each film differently, in order to bring out the uniqueness of each individual story”.
